  • IBM continues tape progress despite cloud and flash advances

Image: ZDNet A new version of IBM’s virtual tape system has higher data compression rates than its predecessor, data-at-rest encryption, and 16-gigabit connections for Z-series mainframes. Solo configurations of the TS7700 series, announced on Feb. 6, 2018, can reach almost 2.5 petabytes, while 8-machine clusters can approach 20 petabytes. Thanks to the virtualization, you can trick a mainframe into thinking that various combinations of flash, disk, and real tape are all one pool. SEE: Quick glossary: Storage (Tech Pro Research)…

  • What is hyperconverged infrastructure, and why should you care?

  • What is big data storage?

Big data storage is a compute-and-storage architecture that collects and manages large data sets and enables real-time data analytics. Companies apply big data analytics to get greater intelligence from metadata. In most cases, big data storage uses low-cost hard disk drives, although moderating prices for flash appear to have opened the door to using flash in servers and storage systems as the foundation of big data storage. These systems can be all-flash or hybrids mixing disk and flash storage. By…

  • Storage For Surveillance

I have written on occasion about digital storage for professional media and entertainment.  Of course, a big part of storage in M&E is for video assets.  An industry that also cares a lot about storing video content is the growing video surveillance market.  Surveillance video cameras with increasing resolution are appearing in many public places, often in response to fears of terrorist activities. As an example of this trend, Wikipedia says that the number of surveillance cameras in Greater…

  • Arcserve acquisition plans heating up

Arcserve is on the hunt to buy more companies. The data protection and recovery company already has made two acquisitions since becoming independent from CA Technologies in 2014.
